Vanuit een evolutionair en biologisch perspectief bekeken, is het een verhoogde staat van paraatheid om het hoofd te kunnen bieden aan bedreigende situaties. In een ver evolutionair verleden waren de meest bedreigende situaties aanvallen door roofdieren, voedselgebrek, conflicten binnen de groep en conflicten met andere groepen. In de huidige Westerse omgeving wordt stress ook veroorzaakt door onder andere de (subjectieve) ervaring van een hoge werkdruk.
