A multimillionaire sues our authors: why Bart and Patrick need your financial support

It was heartwarming to see how much support and funds were raised for the case of Britt Marie Hermes (37) who now lives in Germany. She used to be a naturopathic ‘doctor’ until she ‘retired from the profession in 2014’ and blew the whistle in her blog  www.naturopathicdiaries.com. She was sued for defamation by the American naturopath Colleen Huber, who lost the case before a German Court on May 24th, 2019. Thanks to an action of the Australian Skeptic’s Inc., more than 50.000 euro has been raised to help defend Britt against Huber.

Our Belgian authors, Patrick Vermeren (56) and Bart Van de Ven (37) are being sued by a multimillionaire, Carl Van de Velde – a pro-claimed business coach who promises small businesses pure gold – and his ‘Training Institute’ www.carlvandevelde.be – for defamation, claiming 400.000 Euros compensation.

In our opinion, this action is purely inspired by a chilling effect, to frighten off skeptics that give their opinion. Patrick and Bart won the case before the Court of First Instance in Ghent, Belgium. So far, legal costs amount to 53.000 euros (fifty-three thousand!). However, Carl Van de Velde decided to bring the case to the Court of Appeal. They are facing lengthy court proceedings and more legal costs.

We therefore appeal to the international skeptic community to support the two authors of the Belgian SKEPP and hope to receive the same (financial) support as Britt Hermes.

More info on the article and the legal action

Our authors wrote a skeptical article in the Belgian SKEPP magazine about two companies active in the field of human resources that use dubious theories such as NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) and characterization of people based on their skull (phrenology) and physiognomy (interpretation of outward appearance, in this case of face and hair). One of the two companies discussed in the article was about the Carl Van de Velde Training Institute.

The modus operandus of Carl Van de Velde is very similar to that of Tony Robbins (www.tonyrobbins.com) and American TV preachers. He speaks to a wide audience and whips people up to the point that they get excited and start believing they can get rich if they follow his advice.

Bart and Patrick have – based on careful research of multiple sources - criticized the content of the pseudo-scientific master classes as well as the marketing tricks Van de Velde uses to attract participants.

Carl Van de Velde and his ‘Training Institute’ have been very successful financially. Van de Velde uses his deep pockets to scare and silence critics and skeptics. (International) solidarity between skeptics is our best bet in order to preserve the freedom of speech and to remain skeptic both in writing and verbally.

Tekst van 1 april 2019 - Text from april 1 2019 - Texte du 1 avril 2019

Fundraiser – support freedom of speech!

Freedom of speech is being attacked from all sides these days. Sometimes it feels as if there is no space left for critical consideration in our democratic constitutional state.

SKEPP, the Belgian Skeptic’s branch, has also recently come under fire. The reason for this was the publication of an article in the summer issue (only accessible to members) of our magazine 'Wonder en is gheen Wonder' in which, among other things, the methods of Carl Van De Velde and his eponymous "Institute" were assessed in a well-founded manner. Completely in line with the activities of SKEPP, 'Wonder en is gheen Wonder' is doing exactly what it is supposed to: evaluating pseudo-scientific and scientific-philosophical subjects and practices in a critical manner.

Carl Van de Velde describes himself on his website as "by far the most important and highly valued mentor with regard to professional and personal growth" in Belgium (www.carlvandevelde.be). Through his "Institute", he offers all kinds of seminars and master classes with titles such as "Master in Results", "Matrix of leadership", and "Opus Omnia". The seminars are true mass events with hundreds of participants and are strongly reminiscent of shows by Tony Robbins (https://www.tonyrobbins.com/). In a recent news article — which appeared before the article in the SKEPP magazine — Carl Van de Velde was described as the "Flemish Tony Robbins" ("I'm not a guru - I have a story that works" https://www.tijd.be/ondernemen/management-ondernemerschap/ik-ben-geen-goeroe-ik-heb-een-verhaal-dat-werkt/9983673.html).

The SKEPP article analysed the content of the seminars and master classes offered by Carl Van de Velde and his Institute, as well as the sales practices used to market them. The article covered (1) an assessment against scientific criteria according to Robert Cialdini (6 secrets of influence—see his book Influence – the Psychology of Persuasion) and the 9 persuasion tactics according to psychologist Antony Praktanis, and (2) a substantive assessment of a number of pseudo-scientific theories that we found in his course material, such as the NLP, the creative right brain vs. rational left brain, and so on.

Instead of contributing to the debate in a constructive manner, Carl Van De Velde and his Institute have promptly summoned and torpedoed the authors of the article—SKEPP members Patrick Vermeren and Bart Van de Ven—requesting compensation of no less than 400,000 EUR (!).

SKEPP cannot remain a bystander in this attempt to silence two of its authors. SKEPP supports Patrick and Bart unconditionally and hopes it can count on your support to let the right to free speech prevail.

Remember the call from our Australian counterpart "Australian Skeptics" which, through a fundraising effort, raised sufficient funds to pay for the defence of Britt Hermes against naturopath Colleen Huber. We hope to set up the same type of thing here in Belgium: your modest contribution to help bear the costs of the defence can be donated via the crowdfunding campaign set up by SKEPP. With just 50 euros, we can move quickly and go far. Any surplus will be kept for future actions for members or authors in our member magazine.
